Hoboken HS Girls Volleyball Team achieves a Central Jersey Group I Sectional Championship Appearance

What was supposed to be a rebuilding year, showed tremendous promise.

Hoboken, NJ, — Tuesday, November 9, 2021, The Hoboken Girls Varsity Team achieved a Central Jersey Group I Sectional Championship appearance at Hoboken HS this past week.

The Redwings have completely reinvigorated the program this season. There was a lot of uncertainty going into the 2021-2022 school year. After going 1-16, 2 years ago, 0-4 in a Covid-shortened season last year,  and with the loss of 7 graduating seniors, there were going to be a lot of questions that needed to be addressed at the start of the season. Rookie Coach Felipe Fernandes has worked hard to address these concerns and has the squad running on all cylinders.

The 2021-2022 season was supposed to be a rebuilding year but the Redwings had other plans shocking the county and turning heads in the state. “Better than Yesterday”, which has been the teams rallying cry all season long. As the season started, Hoboken jumped out to a flying start, going 4-0 and winning 6 out of 7 games to start the season, which is more than double the amount of wins they had in the last 2 years combined. Add a couple of wins to that along with an appearance to the Quarter-Finals in the Hudson County Tournament, the girls finished their season 12-7 and now a Central Jersey Group I Sectional Championship appearance.

The biggest secret to their success this season has come from Freshman twin-sister duo Madison and Morgan Walia-Peters who have been playing club volleyball at Brooklyn Elite for the last 3 years along with Freshman Libero Stella Jacey, who also plays at BEV and is also going to be an instrumental piece to the team's success moving forward. As the teams Setter, Madison has accumulated 213 assists, as well as 24 kills, 130 digs, and 51 aces while her sister Morgan, one of teams outside hitters up to this point has 70 kills, 141 digs, and 48 of her own aces. The girls were not alone however, as they were supported by a solid cast of returning players such as standout Sophomore Kayla Zegarra, and Seniors Emily Jacobelli, Emelie Ayala, and Sophia Boyajian, who served as team captain and role model to all the underclassmen coming in this year. Her leadership qualities motivated the girls to always try their best and to never give up in any circumstance. A lot of the credit for the team’s performance this year is also due to Assistant Coach Jacob Faura, a Hoboken High Alumnus and part of the first ever boys team in school history. Coach Faura has been a part of the program for the last 6 years and has always believed in the potential that the girls had, and all his hard work and time spent on practices, scouting, and going over game film is all finally coming to fruition as they prepare to take on Dayton in the Sectional Final. It has been a true Cinderella story that most would only see in movies, and the girls have done more than exceed expectations for this season.
One thing that is for certain, the City of Hoboken should expect the Redwing Girls Volleyball team to be making some noise for years to come!
