Hoboken Public School District Expands Academic Support Systems to Strengthen Student Achievement and Overall Student Success
Hoboken, NJ (Monday, January 19, 2026) — The Hoboken Public School District continues to strengthen its commitment to student achievement and whole-child success through a comprehensive, multi-tiered system of academic support at Hoboken High School. These efforts are designed to meet students where they are, build strong academic foundations, and prepare learners for postsecondary success.
Central to this work is the District’s new partnership with Varsity Tutors, a leading online learning platform that provides Hoboken Middle School and Hoboken High School students with 24/7 access to academic support, tutoring, and enrichment opportunities. Offered at no cost to students and families, the platform expands learning beyond the school day and ensures equitable access to high-quality instructional support.
Through Varsity Tutors, students can access personalized, on-demand tutoring in core academic subjects, test preparation, essay review, and hundreds of live enrichment courses. By combining expert educators with AI-powered tools, the platform delivers individualized learning support—anytime and anywhere—before school, after school, evenings, and weekends.
Varsity Tutors offers a robust suite of academic resources, including:
- 24/7 Academic Support: Live (Human) and (AI) supported tutoring, essay reviews, and skill-building resources aligned to classroom instruction
- AI-Powered Practice: Diagnostics, adaptive quizzes, flashcards, and worksheets customized to individual learning needs
- Hundreds of Live, Interactive Classes & Test Prep: Expert-led sessions in math, literacy, world languages, SAT/ACT preparation, college readiness, coding, and artificial intelligence
- AI Session Insights & Video Playback: Tools that allow educators and families to monitor progress and support follow-up instruction
- Multilingual AI Instruction: Ensuring accessibility and support for all learners
The platform has been live for Hoboken Middle School and Hoboken High School students since the beginning of the second marking period, with faculty currently engaged in onboarding and training to support full implementation.
In addition to Varsity Tutors, all three elementary schools will be launching early morning tutoring support, in addition to their daily Individualized Learning Period and Orton-Gillingham Based interventions. Hoboken Middle School and High School have also expanded in-person academic skill-building opportunities.
Hoboken Middle School has created an Academic Support, Attendance and Recovery Program which includes several key components designed to address student needs comprehensively. The ASAR Program includes academic tutoring in the tutoring lab and new extra-curricular eligibility requirements.
Hoboken High School has launched a number of programs that are run through their Academic Success Center and Career Lab. In addition to the center being open all day long for extra-help and tutoring, students may now participate in the all new BOOST Program (Building Organization & Outstanding Study Techniques), a drop-in after-school program open to all Hoboken High School students in the school’s Career Lab. Meeting twice weekly, BOOST focuses on helping students:
- Strengthen organization and time-management skills
- Build effective study habits
- Learn practical strategies to stay on top of coursework
- Increase academic confidence and independence
BOOST is intentionally designed as a skill-building program, reinforcing executive functioning and academic behaviors that support long-term success across all content areas.
Complementing BOOST is the Step Up for Success Student Workshop Series, a monthly sequence of workshops that supports students’ academic growth, self-awareness, and future planning. Hosted by the Academic Success Center and College & Career Lab, these sessions focus on:
- Building strong academic and leadership foundations
- Time management, balance, and motivation
- Academic and career goal setting
- Communication, collaboration, and self-advocacy
- Resume writing, interview skills, and career exploration
- Responsible and effective use of artificial intelligence for academic and career success
Together, these layered supports reflect a cohesive approach to student achievement—blending academic tutoring, skill development, social-emotional growth, and future readiness.
“Every student deserves access to the resources that help them succeed,” said Kristen Beriloff, Coordinator of the Academic Success Center at Hoboken High School. “At Hoboken Public Schools, our mission is to empower, inspire, and support students in developing the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to set meaningful goals and create plans to achieve them. Through Varsity Tutors and our on-campus academic programs, we are ensuring that support is accessible, intentional, and responsive to student needs.”
“We are committed to expanding learning beyond the traditional school day,” added Jodi Ben-Meir, Career Lab Coordinator at Hoboken High School. “Whether students need academic reinforcement, organizational support, or guidance with postsecondary planning, these programs provide multiple pathways for students to build confidence and take ownership of their success.”
These initiatives are part of the Hoboken Public School District’s broader strategy to close achievement gaps, strengthen academic outcomes, and ensure that every student graduates prepared for college, careers, and life beyond high school.
