Hoboken High School Sees Notable Growth in College Board Advanced Placement Program Participation and Success
Hoboken, NJ — Tuesday, August 20, 2024 — Hoboken High School is proud to announce significant growth in its participation and success rates in the College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) Program. This achievement reflects the school’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence and the dedication of its students and teaching faculty.
In the 2023-2024 academic year, Hoboken High School saw a notable increase in AP participation, with 167 students taking a total of 300 AP tests. This represents a significant rise from the 2019-2020 academic year, when 71 students took a total of 108 AP tests. This growth underscores the school’s successful efforts to expand access to rigorous academic opportunities and prepare students for college-level coursework.
Equally impressive is the improvement in AP exam performance. In the 2017-2018 academic year, only 21% of Hoboken High School’s AP tests were scored at a 3 or higher, a score generally recognized as demonstrating college-level proficiency. However, in 2023-2024, an outstanding 79.5% of all AP tests taken by Hoboken High School students achieved a score of 3 or higher. This dramatic increase highlights the school’s success in enhancing the academic preparedness of its students.
A score of 3 or higher on an AP exam is significant as it is often considered the threshold for earning college credit or advanced placement in college courses. Many colleges and universities across the United States accept AP scores of 3 or higher, providing students with the opportunity to earn college credits while still in high school. This not only prepares students for the rigor of college-level work but can also reduce the overall cost of college by allowing students to bypass certain introductory courses.
Hoboken High School has also seen growth in the average scores of specific AP courses from 2020 to 2024:
- AP Calculus AB scores rose from 2.50 to 4.00
- AP World History (taken by Freshmen) rose from 2.85 to 3.23
- AP English Language and Composition scores rose from 3.10 to 3.53
- AP English Literature and Composition scores rose significantly from 2.00 to 4.18
- AP Research scores improved from 2.67 to 3.52
- AP Seminar scores rose from 2.38 to 3.87
- United States History scores increased from 2.85 to 3.23
In addition to these improvements, starting in 2021, the average AP Calculus score rose dramatically from 2.50 to 4.71 in 2024. Beginning in 2022, the average AP Environmental Science score increased from 2.67 to 3.00. Moreover, in their first years of administration at Hoboken High School in 2024, the average AP Microeconomics score was a perfect 5.00, and the average AP Pre-calculus score was an impressive 4.56.
Furthermore, the recognition of Hoboken High School’s students through the College Board’s AP Scholar Awards has also seen significant growth. In 2019, the school had 3 AP Scholars, 3 AP Scholars with Honor, and 2 AP Scholars with Distinction, with no students earning AP Capstone Diplomas or AP Seminar and Research Certificates. By 2024, the school boasts 25 AP Scholars, 10 AP Scholars with Honor, 23 AP Scholars with Distinction, 2 AP Seminar and Research Certificates, and 17 AP Capstone Diplomas.
“Our students have risen to the challenge of AP coursework, and their hard work is paying off,” said Robin Piccapietra, Principal of Hoboken High School. “We are incredibly proud of the strides they have made, and we are committed to continuing to provide the resources and support they need to excel.”
The school has expanded its AP offerings in recent years. In September, Hoboken High School is set to add AP African American History, AP Statistics, and AP Computer Science. These two new courses will contribute to even more interest and enrollment growth. In addition, Hoboken High School has implemented several initiatives aimed at supporting students in AP courses, including tutoring in the Academic Support Center, AP Kaplan Prep courses, and teacher training programs.
“These results are a testament to the collaborative efforts of our students, teachers, and families,” added Sandra Rodriguez Gomez, Assistant Superintendent of Hoboken Public Schools. “We are focused on creating an environment where every student has the opportunity to challenge themselves and succeed.”
Hoboken High School’s AP Program growth aligns with the district’s broader goals of enhancing college and career readiness for all students. The school’s leadership is committed to continuing this momentum by offering even more AP courses and providing additional resources to help students succeed in these rigorous academic challenges.
