Hoboken Public School District Secures Grant Funding for Computer Science

Hoboken Public School District Receives $10,000 Grant to Expand Computer Science Programs at Hoboken High School

Hoboken, NJ – January 19, 2025 – The Hoboken Public School District is pleased to announce the receipt of a $10,000 grant to further expand its computer science programs at Hoboken High School. This funding, awarded in partnership with Project Lead the Way (PLTW) and Burns & McDonnell, will support the continued growth of the district’s comprehensive computer science curriculum, providing students with access to the tools, technologies, and hands-on learning experiences needed to succeed in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.

The grant will help enhance Hoboken High School’s robust computer science program, which includes the full sequence of PLTW courses, starting with Computer Science Essentials and progressing through more advanced courses such as Computer Science Principles and Computer Science A. As part of this curriculum, students engage in real-world projects and activities that foster critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. The expansion of these programs supports the district’s commitment to ensuring that all students graduate with the foundational knowledge and practical experience necessary for success in STEM careers.

The computer science programs at Hoboken High School are in direct alignment with the New Jersey Computer Science State Plan, which emphasizes the importance of providing high-quality computer science education to all students. In fact, Hoboken High School requires all students to successfully complete a full year of Computer Science Essentials in order to graduate. This requirement ensures that every student has the opportunity to develop essential technical skills, from coding and algorithms to computational thinking and software development.

The collaboration with PLTW is a critical component of this initiative. PLTW is a national leader in hands-on, project-based learning, and its computer science curriculum is designed to prepare students for success in college and beyond. With courses that cover topics such as cybersecurity, app development, and data analysis, PLTW’s comprehensive computer science program empowers students to engage with the technology that drives our modern world. Students at Hoboken High School are not only learning to code—they are also learning how to apply their knowledge to solve real-world problems in innovative ways.

The $10,000 grant from PLTW and Burns & McDonnell will enable Hoboken High School to enhance its computer science offerings, ensuring that students have access to state-of-the-art technologies and additional learning materials. This funding will also help provide students with more opportunities for hands-on learning in areas such as app development, robotics, and software engineering. With the help of this grant, Hoboken High School will continue to empower its students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the digital age.

“We are grateful for the generous support from Project Lead the Way and Burns & McDonnell,” said Ms. Sandra Rodriguez-Gomez, Assistant Superintendent of Hoboken Public Schools. “This grant will allow us to continue offering a world-class education in computer science, ensuring that all of our students are prepared to succeed in college and in the workforce. By integrating these advanced resources and curriculum into our school, we are helping to shape the future leaders of the tech industry.”
