Hoboken Defeats Bayonne, 2–1, to Capture First-Ever HCIAL Girls Soccer Championship

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Hoboken High School Girls Varsity Soccer Team captured its first Hudson County Interscholastic Athletic League (HCIAL) Tournament Championship Tuesday evening, defeating top-seeded Bayonne, 2–1, at Sports Illustrated Arena.

Second-seeded Hoboken (15–2–3) started the game strong, taking an early 1–0 lead just 1:41 into the match when freshman Reaghan Lewis scored from the upper left corner of the box after capitalizing on a loose ball. Bayonne (13–5–1), the defending HCIAL champion, equalized at 1–1 with 23:58 left in the first half on a goal by Avery Chrzanowski.

The game-winning goal came with 21:47 remaining in the second half, when senior Emma Conway delivered a 20-yard free kick into the net. Conway earned the free kick after a 50–50 challenge with a Bayonne defender and converted the opportunity with precision, giving the Redwings a lead they would not relinquish. In the final seconds, Bayonne advanced deep into Hoboken territory but was unable to generate a shot before time expired, sealing the historic victory.

“Winning this county championship game is a testament to the dedication, discipline, and teamwork our players have shown all season,” said Head Coach Victoria Gemma. “I'm extremely proud of every player, every moment of sacrifice, and every inch of progress we have made together. We didn't just win the county tournament — we built a legacy for Hoboken Girls Soccer. We had one thing in mind when it came down to this game, and it was to win! We couldn't have done it without all of the Hoboken community!”

“This championship is a historic achievement for Hoboken High School,” said Athletic Director Jack Baker. “Our girls soccer program has demonstrated exceptional talent, hard work, and determination. The players, coaches, and entire Hoboken community should be extremely proud of this milestone. It’s a great example of what dedication and teamwork can accomplish.”

The championship marks a historic milestone for the program. Hoboken finished the regular season with a record of 15–2–3, capturing the HCIAL American Division title, and now advances to the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2 Group 1 State Tournament as the #3 seed. The Redwings will face Secaucus in the first round on Wednesday, November 5th, at home.

The Redwings’ triumph highlights the growth and competitiveness of Hoboken Girls Soccer, building momentum for continued success in county and state-level competition.
