TEAM Wilderness and Hoboken Public Schools are offering 2 hiking adventures a month in December, January, and February for HMS & HHS students.
Students will have the opportunity to hike through Harriman State Park or another NY/NJ trail system in the area. The exact location will be announced closer to the date.

Clothing Requirments
Winter hiking and snowshoeing can be the best. There are no bugs, there’s crisp air, and there’s nothing like a pristine snow-covered mountain. Dress appropriately and it can be just as comfortable as hiking in spring and fall.
Two things to remember: “Dress Like an Onion” & Avoid Cotton
BASE LAYER? (the layer against your skin)
Top:
- 1 long sleeved polyester, synthetic or wool shirt (you could even have 2 of these)
Bottom:
- 1 pair of long/thermal underwear or leggings (remember: avoid cotton)
MIDDLE LAYERS Top:
- Thick fleece shirts ?and ? a jacket Bottom: typically not necessary
OUTER LAYERS Top & bottom:
- Waterproof/windproof/breathable. Laminates like Gore-Tex offer the best protection. Alternative: polyurethane-coated fabrics that are waterproof but slightly less breathable.
Boots
- OK: Traditional hiking boots/sneakers (your footwear will get muddy)
- BETTER: Above-the-ankle footwear
- BEST: Above-the-ankle winter boots that are waterproof and insulated.
Key Winter Accessories
- Long socks
- Extra pair of long socks (in case one gets wet)
- Small backpack (drawstring backpacks and over the shoulder bags are not permitted) Light lunch Snacks (examples: raisins, beef jerky, chocolate covered nuts, trail mix…) Gloves Warm hat or hood Scarf (optional)
- Sunscreen (optional)
Stay Hydrated
- Bring at least 60 oz of water It's easier to get dehydrated in the winter than in the summer due to the dry winter air ?and ? being dehydrated makes you colder. If you're storing water bottles in your backpack during temperatures well below freezing, you may need to insulate them to prevent them from freezing. An old sock will work in this case. If hiking in extreme cold turn the bottle upside down to prevent the water from freezing at the neck.
Food
Students are responsible for bringing their own food and snacks for the day's adventure. There will be a lot of calories burned so be sure to pack enough food and water to replenish! A more detailed list of what to wear will be emailed closer to the event.
